(CNN) - Two-time Formula One world champion Fernando Alonso will return to the sport with Renault in 2021, the French team announced Wednesday.
Alonso, who left the sport in late 2018 after a final season with McLaren, won his championship titles with Renault in the 2005 and 2006 seasons.

Alonso has made 314 Grand Prix in his F1 career, achieving 32 victories and 97 podiums in three teams: Renault, McLaren and Ferrari.
His last victory was with Ferrari at the 2013 Spanish Grand Prix.
Since leaving the sport, Alonso has become a two-time winner of the 24-hour Le Mans and also competed in the Dakar Rally.
In a statement on the Renault website, Alonso said: “It is a great source of pride and with immense excitement I am returning to the team that gave me the opportunity at the beginning of my career and which now gives me the opportunity to return to the highest level."
