2020-07-10T20:16:26.708Z

A prize money for the 2020 edition of Wimbledon, canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, will nevertheless be distributed to the players according to their ranking, the organizers announced Friday.

With its insurance for cancellation (10 million pounds, more than 11 million euros), the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) "is pleased to announce that it will be able to pay a prize money to 620 players which the classification would have allowed to play the qualifications or to enter directly into the main draw "of Wimbledon this year, according to a press release. For men and women singles, the 256 players who entered directly into the main draw will each receive 25,000 pounds (27,940 euros), while the 224 who would have participated in the qualifications will receive 12,500 pounds each (13,970 euros). For comparison, in 2019, a loser in the first round had received 45,000 pounds (50,000 euros). For the doubles tournament, the bonus will be 6,250 pounds (6,984 euros) for each of the 120 entrants. Finally, it will be 6,000 pounds (6,705 euros) for each of the 16 players in the wheelchair tennis tournament and 5,000 pounds (5,588 euros) for each of the four quad players.

These bonuses are not cumulative for players who have lined up in singles and doubles, said the AELTC. International officials and referees will also be paid. Professional tennis was brought to a complete stop in March due to the coronavirus pandemic, causing many tournament cancellations and a huge shortfall for players, coaches, referees and organizers. Wimbledon quickly decided to cancel its 2020 edition, while Roland-Garros rescheduled in the fall (September 27-October 11), and the US Open is trying to keep up as planned (August 31-September 13 ). In addition, Wimbledon announced Friday that the seeds for next year's men's tournament will be determined directly based on the ATP rankings, while since 2012, the results of the field tournaments preceding the tournament have been taken into account. "There will be no change in the method of selecting the top seeds among the ladies" where the WTA ranking is valid "except in cases where (...) a change is necessary to rebalance the draw" , added the organizers.
