INTERVIEW - The essayist proposes to convene the Estates General in 2022 to give voice to the people, in order to refound the social contract that governs French society.


Édouard Tétreau is an advisor to business leaders. He has just published The Estates General of 2022 in the Editions de l'Observatoire.

LE FIGARO. - Why do you want to convene the Estates General in 2022?

Edouard TÉTREAU. - Because the coming economic, social and political crisis, provoked by the current health shock, will be of historic scale. However, in France, for eight or even fifteen centuries, there has been an exceptional tool for resolving our most serious crises: those where the legitimacy of the sovereign, consent to taxes, the financing of war efforts, were called into question. These are the Estates General, the first occurrence of which took place in 1302 with Philippe Le Bel, who decided to convene and bring together for the first time together the representatives of the three states of France: the nobility, the clergy and the third state.
