Polish presidential elections: those families torn apart by the political debate

2020-07-10T20:34:52.020Z

REPORTAGE - This Sunday's election is a clash between two opposite and almost irreconcilable Poland. Within families, politics becomes a taboo subject.

In Krakow

The Nowak family (the name has been changed) lives in a large house with a garden, divided into apartments, in a district north of Krakow. This is where Adriana's family lives, a 23-year-old French student. On the first floor of the house, his mother, Renata, 47, a travel agent, welcomes us into the living room, decorated with holiday pictures on the walls and a world map at the entrance. We are joined a few minutes later by Aneta, a jug of lemonade and cupcakes in our hands. At 43, this teacher is Adriana's aunt and Renata's sister. She built her house next door.

Talking politics with the family is very complicated for the Nowaks. Or even impossible. "I prefer to avoid the subject, that's all ," Adriana begins. We talk about my work, my boyfriend, my friends. If the conversation deviates from overly divisive subjects, such as LGBT +, the discussion must end quickly to avoid a general argument. ”
