Diosdado Cabello, head of the official Constituent Assembly and considered the most powerful man in the Venezuelan government after President Nicolás Maduro, confirmed that he has a coronavirus.
"Dear colleagues, I comply with informing that after having undergone the corresponding tests, I have been positive in Covid 19, since now I am isolated, complying with the indicated treatment, thanks for your good wishes, with high morale. We will win !!", Cabello said through her Twitter account.
The announcement came at a time when the South American country in recent weeks has reported a rebound in positive cases of the new coronavirus in the country.
The first two cases were reported in Venezuela on March 13, three days later Maduro ordered a radical quarantine that has been maintained ever since.
"All my solidarity (...). He is already resting, he is fine," Maduro reacted after reading the message published on social networks during an address on the state channel VTV.
Cabello had suspended his weekly television program on Wednesday, alleging that he was "struggling with a strong allergy."
What is Coronavirus? How is it spread and what are its symptoms?
Watch the specialMaduro said he had suggested Cabello get a COVID-19 screening test because of symptoms that looked like an allergy.
"He had only had a little allergy. I told him, take the tests, they did them quickly (...) Venezuela with Diosdado and I am sure that sooner rather than later we will continue in this battle at the head of the ANC," he continued. The president assured that Cabello "is fine" and "resting".
Maduro also confirmed that another leader of Chavismo tested positive for the new coronavirus: Omar Prieto, the governor of the state of Zulia (west, bordering Colombia), the region where the greatest focus of the disease is registered in Venezuela. "We did the test and it was positive for the coronavirus, he is a warrior, a man on the street, protecting the Zulia people with this outbreak. He is now undergoing treatment, complete rest, coordinates everything by phone, but now he prioritizes health," said Maduro.
According to official figures, questioned by the opposition and organizations like Human Rights Watch, which they consider hide a much worse situation, in Venezuela 8,010 infections and 75 deaths from the disease had been confirmed until Wednesday.
