Botter, a committed video and a digital experience inspired by the Caribbean

The designer duo used their archives and available materials to pay homage to their origins in a very current collection.

"The collection is smaller than what we used to do, intended to be numbered and, perhaps, collected as works of art," confide Lisi Herrebrugh and Rushemy Botter from their Paris workshop, a few days before to reveal it on video. For this particular season, the two Dutch continue to tell a very personal story, eyeing the Caribbean from which they come (it comes from Curaçao, she from the Dominican Republic).

If this season sometimes pays homage to their past collections, in the choice of silhouettes, like the oversized polo shirts often already seen at their home, the duo has fun, recycles and invents. "We could not print materials during the crisis, so we decided to print on the finished garment," says Lisi Herrebrugh, for example, in front of a raincoat with a white floral pattern that appears painted. The result of these experiments, as on these white sneakers mixed with colored jellyfish (these shoes which are used to walk in the water) recalls the DNA "do-it-yourself" of the two creators.

The collection, started before confinement, had to be adapted to respond to the situation. “We had to edit. Above all, the atmosphere changed, and what we had started working on no longer corresponded to our desires. I think that each brand should have, at some point, this collection made from its stocks. A material can be used in many ways, ” enthuses Lisi Herrebrugh. There are many references to the Caribbean. On this slightly transparent short-sleeved shirt under which we see a white tank top ( "inspired by our grandfathers, who always wear a shirt and a body knit full of perspiration" , smiles Rushemy Botter), in the slightly past colors, reference to bleaching corals, or in these pieces of fabric wrapped around the shoulders of a shirt and reminiscent of towels after the beach. Far from being caricatured, the two creators seek to show the different facets of the region. “Often we associate the Caribbean with color. For us, there is more than that, we also wanted to show the other side, quieter, more personal ”, justifies Botter.

In addition to the video presentation, which opened with a manifesto and a stand against racism in the context of the Black Lives Matter movement, the duo also reveals a fun 3D experience, where Aqua Novio, an avatar under- sailor, can be dressed in pieces from the collection. At a time when clothing a virtual character has become, thanks to Animal Crossing in particular , a full-fledged way of consuming fashion, Botter, both ecological in its approach to recycling, focused on digital, and committed, shows that it is a very current brand.
