The regional public health department (DRSP) of Montreal said in a press release that contagious customers or employees have attended at least five Montreal establishments since July 1, despite the precautions put in place. Health authorities fear that the number of bars frequented by people exposed to the virus is in fact more important, hence their call for testing.

" I'm afraid these observations are just the tip of the iceberg, " said Dr. David Kaiser medical chief of the city's urban environment department. This situation in bars comes as the Montreal region, epicenter of the epidemic in Canada, is experiencing an increase in cases occurring among young people under 39 in recent weeks, said the DRSP.

The bars had received authorization to reopen their doors on June 25 in Montreal, after a long period of compulsory closure. Failure to comply with the distancing instructions in certain establishments last weekend, however, led the Québec government to tighten the precautionary measures: bars must now stop selling alcohol after midnight and close at 1am.
