48 hours in Rome: beautiful escape in the eternal city

2020-07-13T23:31:16.485Z

From the arcades of the Colosseum to the dome of Saint Peter, passing through the Baroque fountains in Piazza Navona, Rome superimposes 2,000 years of history. But the city of seven hills is also the capital of la dolce vita, a unique art of taking time. Andiamo!

A weekend in Rome offers endless wonder. Ancient monuments like the Forum or the Pantheon coexist with sumptuous Renaissance palaces and countless Baroque churches whose domes shape the landscape.

The Eternal City is discovered on foot while strolling through its historic center which stretches from the Spanish Steps to the Campo de'Fiori, with a foray into Trastevere, without forgetting to sit in one of the many trattorias of the city to savor a good pasta or drink a coffee in the sun on the terrace. Immerse yourself in eternal Italy for a weekend.

The arrival

With an Air France or Alitalia flight every hour and a service very well provided by the low cost companies Easy Jet and Vueling, Rome is less than 2 hours from Paris. Most companies arrive at Fiumicino Airport (Leonardo Da Vinci) connected in 30 minutes to the center of Rome by the Leonardo Express train shuttle (€ 14 for one way, which can be purchased online https: // leonardo-express. com /). Some companies, such as Ryanair, land at Ciampino Airport, which offers direct bus connections to central Rome. For taxis, count between 40 and 50 € to get to the city center.

All new, all hot !

DAY 2: FROM THE FAVORITES OF THE VATICAN TO THE BAROQUE COUPOLES OF CENTRO STORICO

Morning

The famous vault of the Sistine Chapel was painted by Michel Ange. Adobe Stock / Adrien

The smallest state in the world, with 44 completely independent hectares in the heart of the Eternal City, the Vatican seems from another time. Just look at the Swiss guards, in Renaissance clothes with halberds, to be convinced. You will see them deployed at the various doors of the gigantic Saint-Pierre square , dominated by the basilica . This monumental masterpiece, in which, among others, Michelangelo and Raphael participated, alone symbolizes the power of the Catholic Church. The 11 Vatican museums (1,400 rooms in total) are located inside the city.

To discover these treasures in the best conditions, it is essential to book a skip-the-line ticket on the site www.museivaticani.va. You will of course not be able to see everything. Focus on Raphael's rooms before entering the famous Sistine Chapel , whose vault created by Michelangelo represents the Last Judgment without forgetting to admire the frescoes by Botticelli and Ghirlandaio on the side walls.

Lunch

You have the choice between a “pizza al taglio” (served separately), bought at the Forno de Campo dei Fiori or a trattoria in its almost centenary juice, Settimio al Pellegrino.

Settimio al Pellegrino , Via del Pellegrino, 117. Tel. : +39 06 6880 1978.

Afternoon

Take the time to get lost in the alleys of the historic center, it's the best way to discover Rome. Start at Place Farnèse , where the palace of the same name is located, a splendid Renaissance building, seat of the French Embassy (visits by reservation). Admire the building seated on one of the two huge granite bathtubs that act as fountains on each side of the square.

Then head to the Galleria Spada to observe Borromini's incredible trompe-l'oeil perspective in the courtyard of the palace. Take a tour of Campo de'Fiori , whose market is no longer authentic, but whose numerous vicoli surroundings are home to artisan workshops, vestiges of corporations from the past.

Then direction Piazza Navona bordered by Baroque facades, with in its center the superb fountain of the Four Rivers . Despite an endless stream of tourists, you will be charmed by the famous square. Continue your stroll to the Pantheon , a monumental temple, on foot for over 2,000 years ... Inside, look up to admire the incredible cupola covered with boxes, pierced by a gigantic oculus.

Aperitif and dinner

Comfortably seated on a sofa, Piazza Navona at your feet, sip a Spritz and enjoy the sunset from the Terrazza Borromini , one of the most beautiful in Rome.
