Ecuador Responds for Suspension of Shrimp Import in China

By Daniel Silva

The Ecuadorian authorities confirmed that the General Administration of Customs of China notified the Ecuadorian embassy in Beiging this Friday about “the detection of traces of coronavirus DNA on the inside wall of a container and in external packaging of shrimp exported to that destination. " The note clarifies that in no case is it the body of the frozen shrimp, where all the tests have been negative.

Due to this finding, the Chinese authorities suspended the import of shrimp from three Ecuadorian companies, a decision that the authorities of the South American country consider "that does not constitute a sanction to the country, nor to the Ecuadorian shrimp in particular" because it is not a generalized measure and both countries They maintain good relations and permanent communication to execute all the processes of control and biosecurity in food exports.

For the first time since the coronavirus pandemic began, the White House press team caught a glimpse of President Donald Trump wearing a mask.

Trump was briefly seen wearing a mask while walking with staff at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. He made no comment while wearing the mask.

The president said wearing a mask while in the hospital is "a very appropriate thing."

“I think when you are in the hospital you should definitely wear a mask. That would not be difficult for me, "Trump said in an interview with Telemundo on Friday.

Over the course of the pandemic, Trump has refused to wear a mask in public, ridiculed those who have, and has done little to encourage his supporters to adopt the common-sense public health measure.

CNN previously reported that some of the president's aides practically begged him to accept Saturday's mask photo shoot and hopes this encourages skeptical Trump supporters to do the same.

Bill Gates warns that pandemic could delay fight against other diseases

The covid-19 pandemic begins to cause disruptions in global healthcare supply chains, slowing the fight against all other diseases, including AIDS, Bill Gates warned.

Gates, speaking at the International AIDS Conference on Saturday, cited projections by the United Nations and the Global Fund that these disruptions could prevent hundreds of thousands of people from receiving the treatments they need in sub-Saharan Africa alone.

The Microsoft co-founder indicated that due to advances made by researchers to help identify those infected, along with improved diagnostic tools and progress with vaccines, he remains optimistic that we will expire covid-19 and continue to move forward with the HIV AIDS.

The philanthropist warned that if drugs and vaccines go to the highest bidder rather than to the people and places that really need them, we will have a "longer, more unfair and deadly pandemic."

"We need leaders to make these tough decisions about equity-based distribution and not just on market-driven factors," said Gates.

The CDC now estimates that 40% of people infected with covid-19 do not have any symptoms.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has updated the guidance for public health officials and mathematical modelers, which now estimates that 40% of people infected with covid-19 show no symptoms.

In May, the CDC created five “Covid-19 Pandemic Planning Scenarios,” using data to provide a variety of possible situations for covid-19 in the United States. The updated scenarios are based on new data the agency received through June 29. It also underlines that these estimates are subject to change as more information becomes available, and the exact numbers are uncertain.

According to the CDC's "best current estimate", 40% of people with covid-19 are asymptomatic. This number is over 35% that the agency estimated on May 20. The percentage of asymptomatic cases remains uncertain, the CDC emphasized.

The CDC now includes an infection death rate, which takes into account both symptomatic and asymptomatic cases (in estimates published in May, the agency only included the death rate for symptomatic cases). Under the “best estimate” scenario, the infection death rate is 0.65%, which means that it is estimated that 0.65% of people infected with covid-19 die.

More information: About half of covid-19 transmissions occur before people get sick; This is higher than the 40% estimated in May.

According to the current CDC "best estimate", the transmissibility of the virus from asymptomatic people - compared to people without symptoms - is now 75% instead of 100%. However, the agency said this "remains highly uncertain as asymptomatic cases are difficult to identify and transmission is difficult to observe and quantify."

The agency notes that this information is "intended to support public health preparedness and planning."

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said that "the covid-19 crisis is a wake-up call" and that "economies and societies need to be reshaped to be fairer and more inclusive in the future."

During his speech at the closing of a virtual covid-19 conference organized by the International AIDS Society on Saturday, Guterres focused on the parallel lessons learned from the ongoing HIV / AIDS epidemic and the current coronavirus pandemic:

“Gender inequalities, gender violence and the criminalization and marginalization of vulnerable groups continue to drive HIV. The HIV movement teaches us that successful responses to a pandemic require respect for human rights and gender equality. The commitment to leave no one behind, the provision of community-led services and innovation. ”

Guterres spoke about the importance of accessibility to viable vaccines as they become available. "Effective treatment for the future coronavirus vaccine must be available to everyone everywhere as a global public good: a vaccine for the people."
