(CNN) - Mexico surpassed Italy in terms of the number of deaths from the new coronavirus, according to figures published on Sunday by the Latin American country's Health Secretariat and Johns Hopkins University.

The Ministry of Health registered 276 new deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the number of deaths in Mexico to 35,006, making it the fourth country with the most deaths from the virus in the world.

The death toll from the virus in Italy is currently 34,954, according to data from John Hopkins University.

Mexico also reported 4,482 recently confirmed cases on Sunday, bringing the country's total to 299,750.

Earlier Sunday, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, commonly known as AMLO, said he met with the health cabinet to discuss the pandemic and said that it "is losing intensity."

The president made the comments before Sunday's figures were released, but the country has reported constant daily increases in cases during the pandemic.

"I want to convey to you that the report is positive, it is good. The conclusion is that the pandemic is going down, that it is losing intensity, ”AMLO said in a video message.

“We are available to receive patients. The other pandemic is the sensationalism of the conservative media, that is why we must continue reporting, comparing Mexico with other countries. Today I want to transmit tranquility because we are professionally improving this pandemic, "added the president.
