Three pubs in and around Sydney were closed for not respecting social distancing measures or because of their link to contaminations. This new epidemic outbreak appeared when the five million inhabitants of Melbourne were again confined Thursday for six weeks. The borders of the state of Victoria, where the country's second largest city is located, have also been closed in an attempt to contain the spread of the virus. Authorities identified 177 new infections in and around Melbourne on Monday after a week of daily numbers of new three-digit cases.

Tony Cooke, deputy police commissioner for the state of New South Wales, of which Sydney is the capital, on Monday attacked " stupid behavior of people at dance parties " after media coverage images of large private parties held in the affluent eastern suburbs of Sydney.

108 dead in Australia

Residents of Australia's largest city have the right to welcome a maximum of 20 people into their homes, while restrictions have been gradually relaxed in recent weeks. At least 21 infections are linked to an outbreak in a Sydney hotel with a popular pub. Authorities are concerned that the virus may spread through New South Wales.

A dozen soldiers who had frequented this pub when they were about to be deployed as part of an anti-virus mission were Monday placed in solitary confinement at an army base located in a rural region of that state.

State Police Minister David Elliott has warned that if the situation is not brought under control, pubs may be closed again. Australia has so far recorded just under 10,000 cases of coronavirus and 108 deaths. In the past few weeks, most Australian states and territories have seen little or no new cases, allowing for more relaxed restrictions, especially for travel and gatherings.
