Amnesty International: Governments should be held accountable for the deaths of health workers

By Zahid Mahmood

More than 3,000 health workers have died from the coronavirus worldwide and governments must be held accountable for their deaths, human rights group Amnesty International said today.

Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States top the list of countries with the highest number of deaths of health workers, according to the report "Global: Health workers silenced, exposed and attacked".

Of 79 countries examined, Amnesty found that:

In Russia, 545 health workers had died from covid-19.

The United Kingdom recorded 540 deaths, including 262 social workers.

The United States has 507 health worker deaths.

"Countries that have not yet seen the worst of the pandemic should not repeat the mistakes of governments whose lack of protection of workers' rights has had devastating consequences," said Sanhita Ambast, researcher and adviser on economic, social and cultural events of Amnesty International.

Threats to speak

The report says health workers and essential workers have faced retaliation by authorities after being threatened with arrest, violence, lack of personal protective equipment (PPE) and, in some cases, lack of payment. For his job.

Two Russian female doctors face retaliation after complaining about the lack of PPE. One of them was charged under Russia's fake news laws and fined up to $ 1,443, while the second faces disciplinary proceedings that could result in her dismissal, Amnesty discovered.

"Frontline health workers are the first to know if government policy is not working, and the authorities who silence them cannot seriously claim that they are prioritizing public health," Ambast added.

Choosing “between death and prison”

An unidentified Egyptian doctor told Amnesty that doctors who report his conditions face threats to his life and interrogations by the National Security Agency, as well as sanctions.

“Many (doctors) prefer to pay for their own personal equipment to avoid this tiring stretch and slack. (The authorities) are forcing doctors to choose between death and prison, "the unidentified Egyptian doctor told Amnesty.

Amnesty said the 3,000 deaths are likely to be underreporting due to a lack of reporting and differences in the way countries count and collect data.

Miami Beach hospitals are reaching full capacity, alerts mayor

By Mitch McCluskey

Hospitals in Miami Beach, Florida are reaching full capacity, city mayor Dan Gelber said Sunday.

"We're going to have to start moving regular beds to ICU (intensive care unit) beds," Gelber told CNN's Wolf Blitzer. "We are clearly seeing signs of exhaustion at this point."

Almost 1,900 covid-19 patients in Miami Beach have been hospitalized and another 400 are in intensive care, with 200 on ventilators, Gelber said.

Gelber added that he is frustrated by the national government's response to combat the spread of the virus.

"There is a total disconnect between what is happening and what is being said from Washington and even Tallahassee and what is happening in some of these communities here," he said.

On Sunday, Florida recorded the highest number of cases in a single day with more than 15,000 new infections and 7,500 hospitalized patients.

Mexico also reported 4,482 recently confirmed cases on Sunday, bringing the country's total to 299,750.

Earlier Sunday, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, commonly known as AMLO, said he met with the health cabinet to discuss the pandemic and said that it "is losing intensity."

The president made the comments before Sunday's figures were released, but the country has reported constant daily increases in cases during the pandemic.

"I want to convey to you that the report is positive, it is good. The conclusion is that the pandemic is going down, that it is losing intensity, ”AMLO said in a video message.

“We are available to receive patients. The other pandemic is the sensationalism of the conservative media, that is why we must continue reporting, comparing Mexico with other countries. Today I want to transmit tranquility because we are professionally improving this pandemic, "added the president.
