The Latin America and Caribbean region on Monday became the second region most affected in the world by the pandemic of the new coronavirus in death toll, behind Europe, with more than 144,000 deaths officially recorded, according to an AFP count.

With 144,758 deaths officially declared on July 13 at 10 a.m. in France, the region surpassed the balance sheets of the United States and Canada (144,023 cumulative deaths), and is behind Europe, which has 202,505 deaths.

Brazil, the most bereaved country

Brazil is the most bereaved country in the region and alone accounts for 72,100 deaths (for 1,864,681 cases), or almost half of the deaths recorded in Latin America. After Brazil, Mexico (35,006), which overtook Italy in number of deaths, to rank 4th in the world, Peru (11,870) and Chile (6,979) are the most affected.

More than 3,370,000 cases have been recorded in Latin America, making it the second most affected region in the world on Monday in number of cases, just behind the United States and Canada (more than 3,400,000).
According to some experts, the total official number of deaths due to Covid-19 in Latin America is underestimated.
