(CNN Spanish) - The Frida Kahlo Museum continues with the celebrations for what would be the 113th birthday of the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, known worldwide as a pop icon for her paintings, ideology and image.

The festivities began on July 6 at the museum, located in the Coyoacán neighborhood, in southern Mexico City, to celebrate the day Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo Calderón was born, in the house that was owned by her parents since 1904 and that today is known as the Blue House. The activities will continue throughout the month with various courses and workshops.

“We refer to Frida Kahlo's birthday as that, her birthday. Closing the museum due to the pandemic, due to the covid-19, was a revolution. In the museum team we wondered how Frida would have celebrated her birthday and we all said that with Mexican music, songs, friends and her tequila and mezcal. She would have recited "I wanted to drown my sorrows in alcohol and the canijas learned to swim," says Hilda Trujillo, general director of the Frida Kahlo Museum.

On July 6 there were various celebrations such as the traditional mornings in the voice of the Mexican tenor Benito Rodríguez, the interpretations of the Mexican flutist Horacio Franco, the themes that the soprano from Veracruz Olivia Gorra sang and the various texts of the Frida Kahlo newspaper read by the actresses Ofelia Medina and Julieta Egurrola.

But children are also part of this great celebration, as Trujillo comments: “Among other activities that will take place in July, there is drawing a picture of Frida, which is a call for children because we realized that they were coming to us Frida's drawings of children from different parts of the world. The first five who have the most likes on our Facebook account will be awarded a lifetime pass for them and their family at the Museum ”.

Do you think Frida was ahead of her time?

Hilda Trujillo
I don't like to say that she was ahead of her time. I think she was a very visionary woman in her time. I think Frida was so rebellious, the social ties did not matter to her and her motto was "I want to live life", for me to bring me to the mariachi band, to play "La Sandunga". Those people who are so sensitive, who know how to perceive their moment. More than advanced, she knew how to perceive her historical moment. Being herself and saying here I am and society will not stop me. But she was not the only one, there was also María Izquierdo and Leonora Carrington, some very fancy women who were her friends. It was a very important historical moment in Mexico that we must bear in mind.

“Frida wanted to live in the moment because she knew that she could die the next day. Frida was an unassuming human being. Frida had such great recognition for our culture, for our indigenous communities. - Hilda Trujillo-

Frida, a pop icon
“Frida is an icon of popular culture, but also of Mexican culture, of the culture of women, of the culture of the disabled. It is a phenomenon and more. In this time of isolation, we have realized how she knew how to face diversity through color, shape, her plants, her animals, butterflies. We must study it because it can help us a lot in this time, where we need resilience by feeling so fragile. What makes us strong is science, creativity, our ability to renew ourselves, "says Trujillo.

Where do you think Frida would like to be right now?

Hilda Trujillo
In Xochimilco, in a trajinera, in wrestling and on a tour of canteens listening to José Alfredo Jiménez and Juan Gabriel. I am sure that he would also go to the Coyoacán market to eat.

"People can visit the Frida Kahlo Museum on our virtual tour. We are renewing ourselves on a human and close journey. We are looking to be creative and we invite you to discover all the other activities. I have thought that Frida had more than 30 operations and at the time she painted her last painting 'Viva la vida!', And how she transformed the pain into a work of art, how she could paint after the operation and They amputate his foot - 'feet, why do I want them if I have wings to fly' - and that fantastic sense of humor that he had, ”says Hilda Trujillo.
