Post-Brexit trade agreement: the idyll between London and Washington is a distant memory

It was one of the enticing promises of Brexit supporters. Once " liberated " from Brussels, the UK would secure an ambitious free trade agreement with the United States. One could hope to “ multiply by five the current trade balance ”, even dangled a report published last year by the Trump administration.

Negotiations were officially relaunched on May 5, during the Covid-19 crisis. “ The alliance between our two countries is among the most important in the history of mankind. The current health crisis makes talks on a trade agreement even more urgent, "said US trade representative Robert Lighthizer in his opening remarks. Prime Minister Boris Johnson, for his part, hopes to put pressure on the Europe of the 27, with which there remain significant differences regarding the exit from the EU, by leading negotiations with Washington and Brussels.
