This year's DSE will be released next Wednesday (22nd). The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology will continue to launch a number of scholarships this year to attract outstanding students. The scholarship program also includes non-academic achievements.

Xue Junlang, a mathematics student at the University of Science and Technology who is about to graduate, is an "astronomy enthusiast". He has been awarded an art scholarship for his experience in planning astronomical activities and participating in astronomical organizations.

Xue Junlang wrote his own Cantonese song "Deep Sky Objects" about astronomy in the third grade of university, and sent it to the 100,000-foot starry sky through the music player "Exploring the Air Balloon".

Xue Junlang was interested in astronauts and astronomical phenomena at an early age. He started stargazing through the astronomical telescope and researching astronomy at 3:00, and became an "astronomy enthusiast". He said that after taking the HKDSE in 2016, taking into account factors such as interest and employment opportunities, he chose to study in the Department of Mathematics of the University of Science and Technology, and aimed to engage in the education industry.

During his four years at the University of Science and Technology, Xue joined the on-campus Astronomical Society and later joined the International Astronomical Organization to communicate and study with overseas experts. He currently holds positions in several international astronomical organizations, including the International Astronomical Union (IAU), the International Dark Sky Association (IDA), the Astronomers Without Borders (AWB), the International Aurora Association, etc. He is also the vice president of foreign affairs of the local astronomical organization Xinghuidian. He often collaborates with the Space Museum to organize astronomy workshops and special lectures for Hong Kong students, as well as astronomical activities in cooperation with schools. Facebook page introduces astronomical knowledge, stargazing etiquette, and the experience of shooting starry sky.

Xue Junlang also has a piano performance level qualification. In his third year of college, he composed a Cantonese song "Deep Sky Objects" about astronomy, and then used the "Exploring the Air Balloon" in Death Valley, California, USA. The music player is sent to an altitude of more than 103,018 feet, which is equivalent to 3 to 4 times the flying height of a civil airliner.

Xue Junlang was recently awarded a 20,000 yuan art scholarship by the school to demonstrate his achievements. He said that he will pursue a teacher education diploma course next, with the goal of promoting STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) teaching.

In addition, the four-member team of the established social enterprise "bARTik Qianbao" was awarded a 50,000 yuan multi-development scholarship by the school. The team was formerly a social enterprise team that assisted poverty-stricken villages in Guizhou to grow moringa and filter the local water; after the villagers were moved to the "immigrant community" by the local government, although they had solved the problem of water, they could no longer survive on farming. There are also insufficient employment opportunities in the district.

The team of Zhu Qiuyue, a fourth-year student of HKUST Global China Studies, and He Yingjia, a third-year student of risk management and business intelligence, decided to set up a social enterprise "bARTik" in order to preserve traditional craftsmanship and minority cultures, and to help villagers maintain their livelihoods in the new community. . The two parties cooperate to produce various products with batik (bartik) technology, such as neck scarves, pencil bags, rucksacks, side bags, etc., with prices ranging from 100 yuan to 600 yuan, to help villagers earn income.

The team opened the bARTik webpage in June in recent years to expand its business online. They intend to use the scholarship as part of the promotion cost, improve the website and increase the social media click-through rate, let more Hong Kong people know about batik crafts, increase product exposure and continue to protect the culture and arts of ethnic minorities.

In addition to the two non-academic scholarships mentioned above, HKUST has continued to provide a number of academic scholarships this year to attract outstanding students. Among them, 6 subjects 5** or above can receive full tuition scholarship and HK$55,000; 5 subjects 5** can receive full tuition scholarship and HK$27,500; 4 subjects 5** can receive one-time full tuition scholarship; 3 Subject 5** can receive a one-time half-tuition scholarship; 2 subjects 5** can receive a one-time scholarship of HK$10,000; and 1 subject 5** can receive a one-time scholarship of HK$5,000.
