Hong Kong confirms 48 new cases. Half of them can't be tracked

Hong Kong reported 48 additional cases of coronavirus on Tuesday, comprising 40 locally transmitted cases and 8 imported cases.

The news comes after the government announced new social distancing measures to contain the latest outbreak, which will take effect at midnight on Wednesday.

Authorities say 24 of the new locally transmitted cases could not be traced, and concerns about the number of asymptomatic cases are very high.

Dr. Chuang Shuk-kwan of the Hong Kong Center for Health Protection said that several of the new cases were related to groups in elderly care facilities and restaurants.

“The number of cases is quite high, [it's] around 50 [per day] in the last few days. More troubling is the proportion of unknown cases among the reported cases, ”Chuang said.

He warned that "there are many unknown sources in the community that can spread easily and can be asymptomatic."

"We are facing challenges in increasing infection control measures within the hospital's authority," Chuang said, adding that one patient in a general ward of Queen Elizabeth Hospital was among the recently confirmed cases today, while another was a cleaner in another hospital.

The new cases bring the city's total to 1,569.

Hong Kong tightens restrictions as it faces a third wave of cases

Hong Kong is tightening travel restrictions and social distancing measures as it battles a "third wave" of cases.

Over the past seven days alone, more than 230 new cases have been seen, an alarming increase in Hong Kong, which has been praised for its quick and effective response to the pandemic. For many weeks before this increase, cases were reduced to single digits, and sometimes to zero, every day.

Under the new restrictions announced Monday:

Inbound travelers who have been or have been in high-risk areas in the past 14 days must show proof that they tested negative before boarding. If they don't, airlines will be penalized.

Public meetings will be limited to four people again. The limit had previously been 50.

Restaurants cannot seat more than four customers together at a table, and must stop dinner services from 6 pm to 5 am every day.

Game centers, bathhouses, gyms, and other public recreational facilities will be closed for a week. Public exhibitions and events will be canceled or postponed.

Masks are now mandatory on all public transport.

Texas man who thought coronavirus was a hoax died after "Covid party"

By Joe Sutton

A 30-year-old man in San Antonio, Texas, died in a city hospital after attending a "Covid party," where people intentionally become infected.

San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg discussed the case with CNN on Monday, saying that these parties were also taking place in other states.

"It comes from the fact that people have been hearing from politicians that this could be a hoax," he said. "And so we saw it in this particular case ... a young person attended a covid party with a positive case known because they thought they were invincible, that this would not affect them."

“This was a Memorial Day party on the lake. Five days later, this young man became ill and again the last thing he told the hospital technical nurse was that he was wrong. And unfortunately too many young people are wrong. ”

Dr. Jane Appleby, medical director at San Antonio Methodist Hospital, confirmed over the weekend that a patient died after becoming ill at a Covid party.

Appleby said the patient said to the nurse, “I think I made a mistake. I thought this was a hoax, but it is not. ”

Covid Parties: The first reports emerged in early July of some young people in Alabama hosting covid-19 parties, a disturbing competition involving people with coronaviruses and the first infected person getting paid.
