An ephemeral Grand Palais being erected at the foot of the Eiffel Tower

A short-lived Grand Palace intended to host the events usually organized in the historic building, which will undergo major work, is being erected on the Champ-de-Mars and will open its doors in January, the public establishment announced on Wednesday. . Built for the 1900 Universal Exhibition and dedicated "to the glory of French art", the Grand Palais must undergo a major renovation until 2024 in order to "bring the monument fully into the 21st century".

The Ephemeral Grand Palace, a temporary building of around 10,000 m2 designed by the architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte, will host the artistic and cultural events, as well as events related to fashion, gastronomy and sport usually organized in the Nave. A large part of the Champ-de-Mars will remain accessible to walkers.

Once these renovations have been completed, the historic Grand Palais will host the Olympic fencing and taekwondo events of the Olympic Games in the summer of 2024, then the armchair and para judo events of the Paralympic Games. The ephemeral Grand Palais will host the judo and wrestling competitions of the Olympic Games, then the Paralympic table tennis competitions.
