The Secretariat for Legal and Technical Affairs of the Presidency, Vilma Ibarra, assured that the Government's project to legalize abortion "is ready" and that the objective is to prevent "avoidable deaths of women", since today the issue is being discussed " the worst of worlds. "

" The abortion legalization project is ready and on the subject everything is quite invented and debated . In that sense, the President (Alberto Fernández) has said it much better than I do, we want to avoid preventable deaths of women," said Ibarra in an interview with América TV .

In this line, he said that "today we are in the worst of worlds, because abortions happen in hundreds of thousands", in addition to pointing out that "women die in clandestine abortions, threatened with going to jail."

The official did not advance the date on which the initiative will be sent to Congress , but insisted that the official intention is "to change that state of affairs, that fewer abortions happen, that is why we believe so much in ESI (Sex education Integral)".

Despite the fact that Congress has resumed its activity through virtual sessions, Alberto Fernández recognized weeks ago that the legalization of abortion would not be addressed in the short term, as was speculated before the coronavirus pandemic.

This is how he explained it: " The truth is that now I have other emergencies ranging from the pandemic to the external debt, which we are in the process of discussing and solving it well has a lot to do with our future."

Other themes

Ibarra also highlighted the Equal Marriage Law in the country, the norm that recognized the civil union between people of the same sex in Argentina, which marks 10 years this Wednesday and which was its main driving force.

"Sectors of homophobia still exist, we live them, they exist and they suffer a lot, but I think that Argentine society is not mostly like this," he said and stressed that "there are conservative sectors that are more resistant to social changes, but mostly Argentina has a population very attentive to rights . "

In that sense, the official recalled that there was "a very beautiful battle for that law, which does not harm anyone, only recognized rights that had been denied to people for a long time."

On the other hand, regarding the relationship between President Alberto Fernández and Vice President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, he said that, "luckily, in democracy, when people elect they put the pen in the hand of a President," although he clarified that " Cristina is an important person in this Government, she had a very large number of votes and she does."

"It is the famous phrase that Alberto used to say 'without Cristina you cannot and with Cristina alone it is not enough'. This coalition that they managed to make decided to nominate Alberto Fernández as President and, luckily, he has a very good dialogue with a vice president who is a great representative of an important sector, "he added.

Regarding the situation of the agro-exporter Santafesina Vicentin, the official maintained that "expropriation is not a policy of this Government," and said that it is only "a measure that is within the laws and the Constitution."

He added that "in a situation of possible job loss for many workers and with a high power in terms of agro-export, it was understood that it was necessary to try to maintain sources of work."

Finally, he admitted that before "a business group with enormous economic difficulties, with a very high suspicion of emptying and with very high credits taken from the national state, it was probably not possible to communicate what they wanted to do accordingly ."
