(CNN Spanish) - The president of Peru, Martín Vizcarra, made changes in 13 of the 19 ministries of his government this Wednesday. The fact occurs at a difficult time for Peru, in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. According to the Johns Hopkins University count, the country is the second most infected in Latin America, after Brazil.

The Peruvian cabinet is renewed a few days after the start of the last year of the government of President Martín Vizcarra, who will cede power on July 28, 2021.

On July 7, Vizcarra called general elections for April 11 of next year, the date on which a new president and national Congress will be elected.

There are 11 ministries that were taken over by new people, six remain with the same heads and two ministers changed their portfolios.

The Minister of Production, Rocío Barrios, who on July 9 reported on her Twitter account that she tested positive for covid-19 during her tenure, is since Wednesday the new Minister of Foreign Trade.

Barrios, who recovers at home while he is in his forties, was sworn into office virtually with the support of a screen that was placed in front of the crucifix in the Government Palace, where President Vizcarra introduced his new ministers.

For his part, Pedro Cateriano was sworn in as the new head of the government cabinet for President Martín Vizcarra. Previously, the official announced his new position through his Twitter account.

"I have accepted the invitation of President Martin Vizcarra to occupy the presidency of the Council of Ministers. I offer: sweat, honesty and democratic conduct for a more just and free Peru ”wrote Cateriano.

The official held the same position in 2015 during the government of former President Ollanta Humala.

To the modification in the leadership of Martín Vizcarra's cabinet were added others: Pilar Mazzetti is the new Minister of Health, this is the second time during the pandemic that the Peruvian president makes a change in this portfolio.

Mazzetti was the head of the covid-19 Operations Command, a group created on April 1 and made up of specialists from the Ministry of Health, the Armed and Police Forces, and private sector health facilities, to address the pandemic in Peru.

This is the third time that Mazzetti has assumed command in a ministry: she was in charge of this same portfolio in 2004 during the government of former President Alejandro Toledo and was also Minister of the Interior in 2006, during the government of Alan García.
