Ennahdha, who has six ministers in the government but feels marginalized in the executive, had reiterated urgently this week his calls for a change of government, highlighting the suspicions of corruption weighing on the Prime Minister. Mr. Fakhfakh is under investigation for a conflict of interest, accused since the end of June of not having ceded the management of his shares in a sanitation company having won public contracts in recent months.
10 days to appoint the successor to Elyes Fakhfakh
He had been appointed by President Kais Saied after the failure, last fall, of Ennahdha to rally a majority around a Prime Minister of his choice. According to the presidency, Mr. Saied now has 10 days to appoint a person able to govern the country, who will himself have a month to convince the absolute majority of deputies to approve his team.
A challenge given that the Parliament elected in October is made up of a myriad of parties. Shortly before the resignation was announced, the Ennahdha party and some of its allies had tabled a censure motion against the Prime Minister.
