At least 23 bodies were discovered last Monday in an underground pit near a municipal police base near Guadalajara, Mexico's second largest city, local prosecutors said on Friday. Of these twenty-three bodies, three have already been identified and the families of the victims have been notified, said the Jalisco state prosecutor's office in a statement. The grave was discovered on a property between two houses and only three blocks from a police base in El Salto, a municipality on the outskirts of Guadalajara.

With 487 bodies exhumed, Jalisco is the state with the highest number of bodies found in clandestine graves since the current government took office in December 2018, according to a report by the National Commission for the Search of Missing Persons published this week. Located in the west of the country, this state has experienced increasing violence for more than five years due to the presence of the powerful drug cartel, Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG).
