Coronavirus cases in Latin America and the Caribbean approach 3.7 million

The total number of covid-19 cases in Latin America and the Caribbean is close to 3.7 million, with more than 3,698,723 confirmed cases and at least 157,336 deaths as of Saturday, according to a CNN count based on data from the University. Johns Hopkins.

Brazil is the most affected country in the region, which registered more than 2 million cases on Thursday.

The southern and central-western Brazilian states that had been spared the worst of the covid-19 outbreak in Brazil now show a rapid increase in cases.
The "epicenter" of the outbreak in Brazil is now believed to be the state of Mato Grosso, according to Fiocruz, a government-based scientific research institute based in Rio de Janeiro after the state reported a 460% increase in cases in 10 days of this month.
