The HA said yesterday that as of 12 noon on July 18, a total of 13 people were in critical condition. Liu Jiaxian said at a press conference today that as of 12 noon today, the number of critically ill increased to 19 (case numbers: 595, 1315, 1338, 1346, 1401, 1424, 1428, 1483, 1485, 1491, 1497, 1562, 1630, 1640, 1679, 1680, 1710, 1718 and 1730), that is, 6 critical cases (1424, 1483, 1485, 1491, 1718 and 1730). Liu Zhi, 14 of them are in the intensive care unit, 11 of them need to insert their larynx to use the ventilator, and another one uses artificial lung.

Liu Jiaxian pointed out that the critically ill patients are relatively old, and many of them are 7 or 80 years old. Their condition deteriorates rapidly after infection and they need to enter the intensive care unit. He called on elderly people and chronically ill patients to stay at home as much as possible; their families should also avoid going out. Once the virus is taken home, the above-mentioned people will get worse quickly and the mortality rate will be higher.

Regarding why not all critically ill patients enter the intensive care unit, Liu Jiaxian said that whether to enter the intensive care unit depends on the clinical decision. He continued that some patients are older or have long-term illnesses, and doctors will discuss with their families. When the patient's condition deteriorates, whether to receive first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, etc. If the family chooses not to need first aid, the patient may not enter the intensive care unit. He emphasized that he would treat according to the needs of patients.
