The Centre for Health Protection said that as of the 18th of this month, 54 cases of Legionnaires’ Disease were recorded this year; while there were 105 cases in 2019 and 2018. According to the authorities, men, people over 50, smokers, alcoholics and people with weakened immune systems are more susceptible to Legionnaires’ disease. In addition, poor maintenance of the water supply system leads to accumulation of water, the use of electric water heaters, massage pools or hot springs, etc., which may also increase the risk of illness.
The authorities remind people with weak immunity to drink, brush their teeth and gargle with sterile water or boiled water; avoid using humidifiers or other equipment that can generate mist. Showers may also generate fine mist. The public should also pay attention to personal hygiene, and inspect, clean, descale and disinfect the filters of faucets and shower heads regularly or as often as recommended by the manufacturer. The authorities also emphasized that citizens should use and maintain a properly designed man-made water supply system.
