(CNN Spanish) - Phase II of the economic reactivation in El Salvador will take effect from next Tuesday, July 21, despite the increase in cases of covid-19 that the country is experiencing in recent weeks, health authorities reported .

In this new phase, public transport and so-called call centers are back in business, and restaurants will be able to serve food on the premises, among other reliefs that could increase the risk of contagion, according to the government.

This Saturday, at a press conference, President Nayib Bukele again criticized the deputies of the Legislative Assembly, who refused to approve his government's request for a new national quarantine.

"If we are not going to lower infections because they do not give us the tools, there is no sense to continue postponing phase II," said the president.

On the circulation of public transport, Bukele said that it is not logical to prohibit it, if there are no restrictions on the mobility of citizens.

"So what is the use of keeping it out of the contagion focus that is public transportation if they are going to go to another contagion focus that is the bed of a pick-up truck," he said.

The second of five phases of the economic reactivation in the Central American country was scheduled to take effect on July 7, but was extended 15 days, due to the increase in cases of the virus.

The Legislative Assembly stated that it does not agree with a new national quarantine and asked the government to present a report on the coronavirus cases, as well as a plan to combat the pandemic. However, executive officials did not keep appointments with Congress.

The deputies have proposed differentiated measures in the most affected municipalities, but the government does not support this type of initiative because they believe that it will not have a significant impact.

Some municipalities promote local measures such as the closing of markets, the prohibition of entering the city center and other solutions in order to avoid crowds.
