Last update date: 2020-07-21 08:02The British government announced on Monday (20th) that in response to China’s implementation of the "Hong Kong National Security Act", it will immediately and indefinitely suspend the extradition agreement with Hong Kong, and will extend the arms embargo on China to Hong Kong, including prohibiting the export of handcuffs and tear gas for use in Equipment for suppression. The spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in the UK responded that, despite China’s solemn position and repeated representations, the UK once again violated international law and the basic norms of international relations, grossly interfered in China’s internal affairs, attempted to interfere with the implementation of Hong Kong’s national security law, and undermined Hong Kong’s prosperity and stability. Strongly condemn and resolutely oppose.
The spokesperson stated that the Chinese government’s determination to implement the Hong Kong National Security Law is unswerving, its determination to safeguard national sovereignty, security, and development interests is unswerving, and its determination to oppose any foreign interference is unswerving. He emphasized that China must be determined to interfere in China’s internal affairs. Will resolutely fight back, urging the British side to immediately stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs and China’s internal affairs in any way, and not to go further and further down the wrong path, otherwise it will reap the consequences.
British Foreign Minister Dominic Raab read a statement in Parliament on the same day, stating that the "Hong Kong version of the National Security Act" is "a clear and serious violation of the Sino-British Joint Declaration, and also a violation of China's international obligations on the assumption of freedom." In addition, "unless and until there are clear and strong guarantees to prevent (system) of extradition from the United Kingdom under the National Security Act from being abused", the relevant arrangements will not be restored.
Lan Taowen also stated that it will provide 3 million Hong Kong people holding BNO passports with a way to naturalize the United Kingdom. This will be implemented as soon as early next year, but evidence must be collected before deciding whether to impose targeted sanctions on China.
