This record figure comes as this South American country lifted some of the restrictions decided on as part of the mandatory two-week confinement imposed in the capital and its outskirts, where 90% of cases of contamination are concentrated.

Some 14 of the 44 million Argentines live in greater Buenos Aires where strict containment was imposed from July 1 to 17. Despite the increase in the number of cases, the authorities have nevertheless maintained the lifting of certain restrictions, in the face of population fatigue and the need to revive the economy, already severely affected by two years of recession.
