The Be'er Sheva District Court today (Monday) sentenced Jordanian citizen Taher Khalaf, who was convicted of terrorism and serious sabotage, to 19 years in prison after he tried to murder two divers in Eilat in November 2018. In addition, the court ordered the defendant to compensate the two in the amount of NIS 250,000. .

In December 2018, the Southern District Attorney's Office filed an indictment against Khalaf in the Beer Sheva District Court. Khalaf is charged with four counts of attempted murder and felony criminal mischief.

According to the indictment, during Operation Cast Lead, Khalaf decided to carry out a shooting attack on the Jordan-Israel border at Israeli targets. The defendant took an automatic weapon that his father kept in their home, purchased 200 ammunition bullets from the market in Amman, and drove with his partner towards the border to carry out a shooting attack. A few minutes later, however, the two encountered the defendant's father, who learned that they were going out to carry out an attack and this prevented Khalaf from carrying out the act. In addition, according to the indictment, during the summer of 2017, the defendant conspired with his cousins to carry out a shooting attack inside Israeli territory.

The indictment states that on November 29, 2018, Khalaf left for Israel for the first time with the work visa he received and began working at the port of Eilat. At the end of the work day, he returned to Aqaba and at night met with his brother and cousins, shared with them that he intended to carry out the attack in Eilat and asked them to record him on video when he said his will to his family.

Nearby, in the defendant's room at a hotel in Jordan, he was photographed on a cell phone and the video was recorded as he separated from his parents and asked them to take care of his wife and children. In the video in question, Khalaf said things in praise of jihad and quoted from the Koran.

According to the indictment, Khalaf thought he would not be able to obtain a weapon and decided to carry out the attack the next day with a hammer, at his place of work in the port of Eilat. On November 30, 2018, the defendant took workers from Aqaba to the port of Eilat. At around 08:20, he spotted two divers at the scene - according to the indictment, these were the only Jews in the area - and decided to murder them. Khalaf hit one of the divers in the head with more than three powerful blows until a Jordanian worker who noticed the act tried to stop him. When Hapoel grabbed Khalaf, he fought him and wounded him with the hammer in the head while instructing him not to intervene, claiming that "we are Muslims and they are Jews."

The defendant then approached the other diver, who was staying on a ladder in the water - and hit him with the hammer hard several times in the head. The diver fell into the water and the defendant jumped after him with the hammer in his hand and swam towards him.

The Jordanian workers at the site tried to persuade the defendant to go up to the pier, but according to the indictment Khalaf refused and said the field - the proclamation of Islamic faith. He then told those workers that he planned to flee the place by sea.

After the Jordanian workers managed to convince him that nothing bad would happen to him if he got out of the water, he went up to the pier. So they grabbed him and handed him over to the security forces where they arrested him.
