The U.S. Department of Justice sued two Chinese citizens on July 21, accusing them of being hackers and stealing data from defense subcontractors, COVID-19 vaccine researchers, and many companies around the world.

Washington stated that the two Chinese people indicted were Li Xiaoyu and Dong Jiazhi. They were accused of participating in a long-term cyber espionage, stealing weapon designs, drug information, and software source codes. The prosecution file did not mention the names of the affected companies, but it was pointed out that the two had stolen data calculated by the United States, Britain, Germany, Australia and Belgium's terabyte (TB).

The document refers to the two as outsourced by the Ministry of National Security (MSS) of China. The prosecutor mentioned that MSS provided hackers with information on important software vulnerabilities for use in infiltrating target computers and collecting intelligence. Their targets include demonstrators in Hong Kong, the office of the Dalai Lama and a non-profit Christian organization in China.

The authorities said that they have been active since 2014, and their most recent operation was an attempt to steal cancer research content, and they had committed crimes with personal accounts. One of them even attempted to extort the victim for $15,000 in virtual currency. Prosecutors also criticized China for shielding cyber criminals in exchange for stealing intellectual property rights.

The Chinese Embassy in Washington has not yet responded to the incident.
