THE QUESTION.While the French auctions for licenses for the next generation of mobile telephony will take place in September, some French telecom operators did not yet know which equipment manufacturers they would be able to work with. Since the so-called “Huawei” law (although it does not officially bear this name) passed in 2019 by the French Parliament, these operators have the obligation to request prior authorization from the government to use a particular telecom equipment supplier in their networks. Behind this law, a fear: that the security of the equipment of the Chinese company could represent a threat to the defense and the national security of the country. At the end of last year, operators submitted their requests. And since then, they have been waiting for the answer. This mainly concerns Bouygues Telecom and SFR (Altice) who work with Huawei for their 5G networks in certain cities.
