South Korea falls into recession amid pandemic

By Jill Disis

South Korea has fallen into recession as the coronavirus pandemic affects all of the world's major economies.

The Asian economy contracted 3.3% in the April-June period compared to the previous quarter, the Bank of Korea announced Thursday. This represents a second consecutive quarter of declines.

"While the recovery is already underway, it is likely to be slow in the coming months as the external environment is only gradually improving," wrote Alex Holmes, Asia economist for Capital Economics, in a research note. He noted that the drop in exports was the largest since 1963.

"We do not believe that it will be until next year that production recovers its pre-crisis level."

The main world economies are struggling because the pandemic paralyzes industry and forces people to stay at home. Japan went into recession earlier this year: That country was already struggling before the outbreak due to an increase in sales taxes and the aftermath of a powerful typhoon.

China's economy, meanwhile, avoided recession by growing in the last quarter. But the data still suggests that recovery is slow and that people are still nervous about leaving their homes.

Brazil's acting health minister said Wednesday that the coronavirus situation appears to be "under control," despite the country reporting a record number of new cases on Wednesday.

In a press conference before the country's official numbers on covid-19 were published, the interim minister of Health, Eduardo Pazuello, said: "The scenario seems to me to be under control", but acknowledged that there are still "growing cases ”And stated that the increase was due to the weather.

"It is partly due to winter, to social change in winter, and this causes pollution to increase," he said.

It was previously speculated that warmer weather would slow the spread, specifically by United States President Donald Trump at the start of the pandemic. However, health experts have said that warmer weather is unlikely to stop the spread of covid-19.

"Climate would only become a major seasonal factor in covid-19 control once a large proportion of people within a given community are immune or resistant to infection," said Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Salud, in a blog published in early June, citing experts in infectious disease transmission and climate models.

Pazuello also said she was hopeful about the capacity of the health system now that they have learned more about the outbreak.

“We have a real learning curve, we understand how to do it. Collapse situations have already occurred in the north and northeast, and today the south and southeast of the country have an organized medical structure. We are in a position to give a more effective response and not let the system collapse, "he said.

The Ministry of Health released daily numbers for Brazil's coronavirus shortly after the press conference, reporting 67,860 recently confirmed cases, the highest daily number in the country since the outbreak began. The ministry also added 1,284 new deaths.

The total number of covid-19 cases in Brazil is 2,227,514 and 82,771 total deaths.

"You know how it works," Trump said, in a clip that aired on Fox News. "If I'm the first, they'll say, 'He's so selfish that he wanted to get vaccinated first,' and then other people would say, 'Hey, that's a very brave thing.'" Absolutely, if you want me to do it, if you think it is correct, I would take it first or I would take it last. ”

"You know if I take it first, I'll be ... I lose anyway with that, right?" Trump continued. "If I take it first. And if I don't take it, he doesn't believe in the show! '”He said.
