2020-07-25T13:46:12.071Z

The Paris Council has decided to give the name of Alice Milliat to one of the speakers that will host the Olympic Games in four years in the capital. A great first for a sportswoman.

"It will be the first Olympic equipment in the world to bear the name of a sportswoman." The Paris council, meeting on Friday evening, voted unanimously for the future Arena 2, located in the north of the capital, to bear the name of the former sportswoman Alice Milliat. "No Olympic equipment bears the name of a woman today: Stade de France, Pierre de Coubertin, Jean Bouin", regretted this Saturday the president of the communist group and citizen in the council of Paris, Nicolas Bonnet-Oulaldj, at the initiative of this wish. "The Olympics that we wanted is first and foremost an inclusive, united vision, which wants to advance the place of women's sport in society", pleaded the day before the elected representative in front of the hemicycle of the Hôtel de City.

According to figures reported by the Communist, there are “only 38% of women licensed in Olympic federations and there are only two women presidents of Olympic federations in France (Isabelle Lamour for fencing and Nathalie Péchalat for sports of ice)". The construction work for the future Olympic equipment must start at Porte de La Chapelle (18th arrondissement), in the north of Paris, at the start of the school year. It should host badminton and taekwondo Olympic and Paralympic events during the 2024 Games.

Alice Milliat, pioneer in the recognition of women's sport

Alice Milliat, born in Nantes in 1884 and died in Paris in 1957, was a swimmer, hockey player (field) and rower, a "Parisian who fought in 1917 for women's sport to be recognized at the Olympic Games" and " in 1922 organized the Women's World Games in Paris at the Pershing stadium in the 12th arrondissement ”, noted Mr. Bonnet-Oulaldj. The full sports and disciplines program for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will be validated in December. In addition to the sports usually present at the Summer Olympics, the organizing committee for the Paris-2024 Games wanted to add four additional sports to its program: breakdance, climbing, skateboarding and surfing.
