Latin America and the Caribbean became the region with the highest number of coronavirus infections in the world on Sunday, adding 4,340,214 and exceeding the cases registered in North America, according to an AFP count until 21:00 GMT based on official sources.

It is the first time that the number of infections in the region has exceeded North American records, which accumulates a total of 4,330,989 cases. In the latter, the cases correspond mainly to the United States, the most affected country in the world , with 4.2 million infections and nearly 150,000 deaths.

In Latin America, Brazil is the main impacted, with 2,394,513 cases and 86,449 deaths until Saturday. There have also been increases in infections in countries such as Mexico, Peru, Colombia and Argentina, which are trying to resume their activities due to the economic impact of the pandemic.

In number of deaths, Europe continues to lead the fatalities, with a total of 207,933, followed by Latin America and the Caribbean (182,726), and the United States and Canada (155,673).

In May, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the American continent the new epicenter of the pandemic , after Europe was hit hard in previous months.

Since then, the covid-19 has expanded at full speed, setting off alarms in organizations such as the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), which expressed concerns about the most vulnerable.

Since it was first detected in China late last year, the disease has caused more than 16.2 million cases in total and over 646,000 deaths worldwide.
