Five years after the femicide of Chiara Páez, the teenager whose death led to the beginning of the “Ni Una Menos” movement, another young woman from the south of Santa Fe was murdered in a similar episode. The 19-year-old victim was missing for almost 24 hours until her body was found in the courtyard of the home of the alleged perpetrator of the crime.

The case dealt a huge blow to Berabevú, a town of more than two thousand inhabitants located almost 150 kilometers west of Rosario and 60 kilometers north of Venado Tuerto. Until this last city they transferred the remains of the victim to perform the autopsy after the search of the 28-year-old's home, which they identified from testimonies and analysis of video from security cameras.

The last images of Julieta Abigail Del Pino alive are from Friday night, when she left work at a kiosk on her way home. He had contacted his mother by telephone before leaving by bicycle and was 200 meters from his home in the video that the police obtained after receiving the complaint from his family. In the filming they warned that someone was following her by car and thus they pointed to Cristian Romero as the main suspect and, until now, the only one arrested for the fact.

"If there are more accomplices, let them appear," demanded the mother of the murdered young woman. The family was the protagonist of a protest in the Berabevú square this Sunday afternoon, which was held in parallel with other similar ones in Rosario and different towns in the province. There he claimed: " Educate your men, women are not an object ." Accompanied by her husband and son, she recalled about her daughter: "She proclaimed 'Ni Una Menos' so much when it happened in Buenos Aires and we saw it so far away."

After receiving the condolences of her neighbors, Fabiana appreciated the effort made on the eve to search for her daughter. On the other hand, he said: "I need them not to abandon me, to help me continue asking for justice. My Juliet can be anyone ." In this way she asked that her daughter "be the first and the last" after femicide. "We all have daughters, all are free or were free in our town. We trusted everyone, we were all friends and now we know that it is not so," he said.

According to sources linked to the investigation, the fence on the alleged murderer began to close on Saturday afternoon, when he went to the headquarters of the Commune to try to review the material recorded by the public video surveillance system. " It seemed that he wanted to leave town , the police already knew and they arrested him," they explained from the Public Prosecutor's Office (MPA) about the last steps prior to confirming femicide. Meanwhile, social media was overflowing with photo posts and calls for help with the disappearance.

When the police entered the scene, the sniffer dogs immediately went to the backyard. There the authorities found a dug well. Lime had been thrown into the body and placed in a tank at ground level. Julieta's burned clothes were seized as part of the first measures taken by the prosecutor Susana Pepino, in charge of the case that is being processed in the southwest of Santa Fe territory.

The news of the murder around 10 p.m. immediately sparked protests at Subcomisaría 5 °, the first place where the accused was housed. The Police retired amid insults and blows to the patrol car when they transferred him to the Chañar Ladeado branch, about 20 kilometers away. Some people who were at the scene reported that Romero  was dressed as a force agent in order to get him into the truck in front of the protesters.

From the MPA confirmed that the suspect remained under arrest this Sunday in the Melincué City Hall, south of Berabevú. Waiting for the forensic report to establish the mechanics of the fact and the cause of death, they noted that there was no confession of the crime attributed to him.

This Monday, the detainee will be charged by the prosecutor Pepino, although the hearing will be held by videoconference as part of the health protocol for the coronavirus pandemic.

In the last ten years in Argentina there is an average of one femicide every 30 hours. According to statistics from the Supreme Court's Office of Domestic Violence, in 2018 alone there were 278. The majority of murders occur in the houses of the victims and are committed by couples or ex.
