(CNN) - A tropical disturbance is expected to strengthen and develop into a tropical storm over the next 24 hours, prompting the National Hurricane Center to issue tropical storm warnings for parts of the Leeward Islands, Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
The center of potential tropical cyclone nine is currently more than 900 kilometers east of the Leeward Islands. The system is forecast to become Tropical Storm Isaias tonight or Wednesday and will begin impacting the Leeward Islands later tomorrow and the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico from Wednesday night through Thursday.
Along with strong tropical storm winds, heavy rains of 7 to 15 centimeters are forecast, and up to 25 centimeters are expected locally in the coming days. Heavy rains could cause flash floods and landslides.
