An Egyptian influencer was sentenced Wednesday (July 29) to three years in prison for " inciting debauchery " after posting videos on the video-sharing network TikTok, the sixth such conviction in a week, a judicial source said. . Manar Samy was arrested in July in particular for " immorality and incitement to debauchery " via his online videos, according to a statement from the prosecution.

The young woman appears there dancing and singing in playback of successful songs, " contrary to good morals " and " for purposes of prostitution ", according to the prosecution. She can appeal the judgment which, moreover, " relates to the payment of a fine of 300,000 Egyptian pounds (16,000 euros) ", said the same source adding that she could be released against a bond of 20,000 Egyptian pounds.
The judgment comes just days after another court sentenced five Egyptian women to two years in prison for breach of morality for content shared on TikTok. These Egyptian women had also posted videos on TikTok, deemed immoral by the authorities of the conservative country.

A dozen female influencers have been targeted in recent months in Egypt, where the internet penetration rate is over 40% among the 100 million inhabitants. One of the convicted has over 3 million subscribers on TikTok and another 1.3 million. Egypt has in recent years imposed strict control on the internet through laws allowing authorities to block websites considered a threat to national security and to monitor personal social media accounts with more than 5,000 subscribers.
