The armed men attacked the village of Agbubu and killed 13 members of the same family, according to a statement from the police. “ I was there and was one of those who picked up some of the bodies, ” Kogi State Police Commissioner Ede Ayuba said. “ Within this family, only one person survived. His uncle, his mother, his uncle's wife, his younger brother, his older brother's wife, his wife and all his children were killed, ”he said.
An investigation has been opened, Ayuba said, adding that the attack could be linked to a long-standing dispute over land rights. The most populous country in Africa, Nigeria has been plagued by bloody attacks by armed criminal gangs in the North West and an Islamist insurgency in the North East for ten years.
