Audi RS4 Avant, not just a station wagon

2020-07-30T14:16:21.667Z

TEST - Descendant of a line of successful models, the new opus of this exclusive wagon celebrates 25 years of the RS label.

This cannot be reduced to a simple question of semantics. In the large family of station wagons, there are models for racing and those for racing. The Audi RS4 Avant belongs to both categories. His repertoire is immense. It is able to comply with a multitude of uses: transporting a family and its luggage but also spinning the train of a Porsche 911. Heir to the famous RS2 which had been produced at Porsche, the RS4 Avant symbolizes by itself the RS spirit. On the occasion of the recent facelift of the A4, engineers have refined the weapons of its seduction.

The silhouette is always subtly lowered, like a lion on the lookout; the swollen wings, especially at the rear. Particularly expressive, the completely redesigned grille confuses that of the new RS6 Avant. It is now frameless, flared, adorned with shiny black 3D cells and topped with a thin air intake. This more assertive face is also based on the discontinuous patterns of the light signature. A model of its kind in terms of refinement and quality of finish, the interior is still dressed in leather seats, the embossing of which takes up the design of the grille cells. The RS4 has access to the manufacturer's latest developments in infotainment. Not only has the menu layout been completely redesigned for ease of use, but the new touchscreen system has led to the disappearance of the rotary wheel.

With RS modes, the tachometer takes the form of a diagram. This is the other great novelty of this sporty break, a button on the steering wheel allows you to directly select the personalized RS1 and RS2 modes. These programs control the management of the engine and automatic transmission, the steering, the suspension, the Quattro differential and the sound of the twin-turbo V6. Always so sharp, the latter is now equipped with a particulate filter. Sufficiently flexible to move smoothly in an urban or peri-urban environment, this 2.9-liter 450 hp V6 from the Porsche Panamera is always ready to go. Acceleration (0 to 100 km / h in 4.1 seconds) and pick-up are comparable to those of the best sports coupes of the moment. The mechanics serve a really sharp chassis. Especially with the Dynamic RS pack (+ € 6,250) which reinforces agility, without degrading comfort.
