Several thousand Belarusians took part in a rally in Minsk on Thursday (July 30) in support of the main opposition candidate in the August 9 presidential election, despite a tense situation with the recent arrest of several leading opponents.

Supporters of Svetlana Tikhanovskaya gathered in a park in the Belarusian capital for the biggest opposition rally in Belarus in recent years, according to an AFP journalist on site, with human rights NGO Viasna assessing to 34,000 the number of people present.
