Coca cultivation in Bolivia increases by 10%

(CNN Spanish) - Coca cultivation in Bolivia increased by 10% in 2019, according to a report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (Unocd, for its acronym in English). The figure represents an increase of 2,400 hectares compared to 2018 data.

The Coca Cultivation Monitoring Report, presented this Wednesday virtually by the Unocd representative in Bolivia, Thierry Rostan, specifies that coca cultivation increased by 35% in five protected areas of the country. "In all these protected areas, a total of 315 hectares of coca crops were identified, observing an increase of 82 hectares compared to 2018. Only the Carrasco National Park presents a reduction of 9%," states the document.

Monitoring also indicates that an increase of 9% was detected in the Yungas region of La Paz, reaching 16,296 hectares; in the tropics of Cochabamba an increase of 13% was registered, reaching 8,769 hectares; while in the North region of La Paz, the cultivated area increased 44% to reach 468 hectares of coca cultivation.

"The highest increase in coca cultivation in the Yungas of La Paz was detected in the Sud Yungas province, with 597 ha increased, reaching 10,374 hectares of coca cultivation in 2019. In the Tropic of Cochabamba, the Carrasco province registered a 720 hectares increase, reaching a total of 3,842 hectares of coca crops in 2019 ”, specifies the report.

According to the document, according to government data, "the amount of coca leaf traded in the two authorized markets (Villa Fátima in the department of La Paz and Sacaba in the department of Cochabamba) was 23,877 metric tons in 2019. The 90% of the legally sold coca leaf comes from the Villa Fátima market, while the remaining 10% from the Sacaba market. In 2019, the weighted average price of coca leaf in these authorized markets was US $ 12.5 per kilogram. ”

Unocd recommended that the Bolivian government increase control measures to prevent the expansion of coca crops to unauthorized areas and continue to strengthen rationalization and eradication processes.
