Man in Mong Kok was charged for shoplifting and was arrested after falsely reporting that he was beaten by police during detention

A 46-year-old man surnamed Leung was arrested by the police on suspicion of "shop theft" in Mong Kok District on the 28th of last month and was taken to Mong Kok Police Station for detention for investigation. The next day, the police charged the man with one count of "shop theft". The man made a complaint on the same day (29th) that he was beaten by a police officer in the detention room of Mong Kok Police Station while he was detained by the police. The case was transferred to the CAPO for follow-up. After in-depth investigation and consultation with the Department of Justice, the police arrested the man yesterday (30th) and prosecuted him for "falsely reporting a crime". The case will appear in West Kowloon Magistracy next Monday (August 3). The police stated that the CAPO will investigate each complaint in a fair, just and impartial manner.
