Bachata is declared intangible cultural heritage 0:45
(CNN Spanish) - The United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture (Unesco) presented this Thursday to the Dominican Republic the certification of inscription of music and dance of bachata as intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
In the framework of the virtual celebration, tribute was paid to the Dominican singer-songwriter Víctor Víctor, one of the main promoters of the musical genre, who recently died of the coronavirus in the Caribbean country.
The ceremony took place in the Dominican Republic delegation to Unesco in Paris, France, and was broadcast virtually by Zoom. It was preceded by the Dominican ambassador to that institution, the also Dominican singer-songwriter, José Antonio Rodríguez.
During the act, some of the most emblematic songs of Víctor Víctor were heard. The words of thanks were given by Sobeida Ferreras, the artist's widow.
Bachata was inscribed as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on December 11, 2019 before the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Unesco, held in Bogotá, Colombia.
