In the midst of quarantine due to the coronavirus pandemic, in Greater Buenos Aires there is not only concern about the occupation of intensive care beds but also the growth of insecurity, with particularly violent cases such as that of a neighbor of Almirante Brown who was robbed of the car with his son inside or the murder of a policeman who wanted to avoid a robbery in Laferrere.

Against this background, this Saturday the Buenos Aires Minister of Security, Sergio Berni, rekindled the discussion on the "strong hand":  "I have no guarantee, I believe in zero tolerance, absolutely," he assured. He also praised Alberto Fernández and proposed that the detainees work.

"For some progressives the offender is a victim of society and the Peronists society is the victim of criminals. They can say that the political space in which I am hugging garantismo, but  if there 's something I have not garantismo.  Not me I like to speak of a strong hand, I believe in zero tolerance. Absolutely zero tolerance , "said Berni amid the growing cases of insecurity.

"For some, their bedside book may be (Raúl) Zaffaroni; for me it could be (René) Favaloro, if they want, although it is not. My bedside book may be (Rudolph) Giuliani and I understand that we must have zero tolerance", He went on in reference to the former mayor of New York recognized for installing that concept and for having successfully fought crime in that American city.

"In the political space, everyone has the freedom to think as they like, but the province's security minister is me," Berni added in a dialogue with the program "Early Saturday" on Miter radio .

In turn, Berni again referred to his differences with the Minister of Security of the Nation, Sabina Frederic. "She is the Minister of the Nation, she has a totally different responsibility, but there is one thing we have in common. Both the minister and I want to solve crime problems.  Now, each one has a different perspective, each one comes from a different perspective. different space, each one has a different way of approaching the security problem and understanding it ".

Berni before television cameras, a frequent image during the pandemic.

"The minister comes from a progressive space, I come from a Peronist space. Perón said: 'There is only one class of people who are the ones who work' and therefore the effort I am making to make the Prison Service understand that prisoners have than to work when they are detained . Because they cannot live on a gift from the State; they have to work and earn a living with the sweat of their brow, as all good men do. They have to support their family. And there we have another problem, if the prisoner does not support his family when he is in jail, crime supports him. We have an obligation to teach him a trade and instill in him the habit of working, "said the Bonarense security minister.

Reinforcements and release of detainees

"We are asking for a strengthening of the national government by its federal forces. This pandemic today has left us almost 4,000 street personnel totally out of service, among the infected and isolated. And a detail that is not minor, from the prisons They have released, for what is said because we do not even have that reliable data, 4,500 criminals who are now committing crimes in the Buenos Aires suburbs. They did it to empty the penitentiaries but the prisons are full, "said the Buenos Aires security minister.

And he pointed to the Justice: "All the detainees who have had a resonance due to gravity had been released in April, when the massive releases began. What a coincidence that one of the criminals that we detained yesterday was also released in April. the records that each of them had and if it is correct that they were on the street. "

"The Penitentiary Service not only complicates our lives by releasing prisoners who should be locked up, but we also have a prison system that has the same prisoner detained with two different names, with two different document numbers, and this is what I mean by making structural transformations" Sergio Berni said in another section of the radio interview.

Praise to Alberto Fernández

The Buenos Aires Minister of Security was again asked about who he considers to be its leader, since he had previously said that he was responding to Cristina Fernández de Kirchner. Now he not only reiterated his loyalty to the vice president, but also lauded praise for the President.

"My political boss is Cristina (Fernández de Kirchner), and why is she Cristina? Because I have come from a political space for 32 years, with the same political leaders. The Frente de Todos is a great front where the PCR is even ( Revolutionary Communist Party), which has its other political leaders and I have nothing to do, nothing, with the Communist Party, I am in opposition to the PC, but they are within the Front of All and I respect political coexistence ", emphasized Berni.

"If you ask me who Alberto (Fernández) is? He is the person who gave Peronism the desire to be a military man, the person who put the political campaign on his shoulder, the man who was able to displace the neoliberal policies of Macrism," stressed the provincial minister.

"Alberto is the man who gave us back our dignity, the man who is going to get us out of this crisis," he added and concluded:"I feel comfortable in this political space because I can raise my voice in a respectful way since in many things I do not agree and I can say it . "
