A research team in the United States found that young children may spread the virus more easily than adults after being infected with the new coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19). This may reverse the perception that the virus has little effect on young people and that the campus should be restarted.

A team from Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, USA, conducted an age grouping study on new coronary pneumonia. The research team divided 145 patients into 3 groups, including 46 young children under 5 years of age, for nasopharyngeal swab sampling tests.

Studies have found that the amount of virus in the upper respiratory tract of children under 5 years old is 10 to 100 times higher than that of older patients. The research team pointed out that the behavior and habits of young children, coupled with the confined spaces of schools or nurseries, raise concerns that the new coronavirus can spread rapidly in this group.

The research has been published in the latest issue of "Journal of the American Medical Association" (JAMA Pediatrics).

Many similar studies in the past have focused on virus damage. The virus is said to be more lethal to older people, but it is lower in younger patients. Therefore, there are not too many studies to distinguish the transmission ability of young patients.

South Korea published a study on July 16, stating that patients between the ages of 10 and 19 have the same ability to transmit the virus as adult patients. If the research is true, together with the latest research in the United States, it may be able to reverse the past belief that the virus has little impact on young people and government agencies' views on restarting campuses.
