Mexican journalist Pablo Morrugares, of the Guerrero state's PM Noticias website, was shot dead in a restaurant in Iguala, the state's human rights commission and police sources said on Sunday.
The Commission condemned the crime in a statement and demanded that an "immediate investigation" be carried out to identify and arrest the culprits. Pablo Morrugares is the fourth journalist killed in Mexico in 2020, according to an AFP count.
Police said he was killed at 1:00 a.m. on Sunday while in a restaurant in Iguala town with a police officer, who was providing protection. Both were shot dead by heavily armed men who entered the restaurant and also killed a guard.
Mexico is considered one of the most dangerous countries for journalists, with more than 100 members of the press killed since 2000. More than 90% of these crimes have gone unpunished.
