(CNN Spanish) - Cuban Yoenis Céspedes has chosen not to play the rest of the 2020 Major League season. This was announced by the general manager of the New York Mets, Brodie Van Wagenen, according to the official website of the team.
The general manager later confirmed in an interview with SNY that Céspedes' decision has to do with "reasons related to covid-19". According to Van Wagenen, the team was unaware that this option was being considered by the player, and that this Sunday was the first time that the board learned of their concern regarding the pandemic.
Cespedes' discharge for the rest of the season was confirmed after the Cuban-born player was absent this Sunday from the game between the Mets and the Atlanta Braves.
