About the author: 35 years in the government, former Financial Secretary John Tsang (John), his uncle potato chips deeply rooted in the hearts of the people. After the self-willed John "snap the gun," he has no fixed position and is enthusiastic about participating in different activities. In addition to founding the non-profit organization "Uncle Potato Chips Co-Creation Society", he is also the host of commercial radio music programs and the fencing coach of La Salle College. In recent years, as Bowtie's senior consultant, he has played the role of future builder. His vision is that all Hong Kong people can be protected and truly enter a new era of self-protection.

Promoting self-protection is not a bad thing

When I first became the Financial Secretary, I started the habit of blogging. First, I wanted to share my thoughts with you through text; the second was to listen to the different opinions of all parties and adjust policy policies. Although it has been a few years since I resigned from public office, and it has been a while since I left the pen, fortunately, there are still many citizens who are willing to ask me to "pour in."

In recent years, with social changes and severe epidemics, Hong Kong people have generally become pessimistic. Some people say that Hong Kong has Game Over, and they also point out that Hong Kong people have lost their protection. Seeing that everyone's views on the future are getting more and more negative, I feel as helpless as everyone is, but I believe that we need to use actions to change the status quo.

What I have heard most these days are "self-improvement", "self-help" and "self-help". In summary, it is nothing more than "self-protection". In fact, it is not a bad thing to advocate self-protection, and "self-protection, save yourself" is not empty talk.

I still remember the years when I worked in government departments. Every day I felt like I was in an aircraft carrier. Not only was it because all decisions needed to be advanced, but also all the sounds from outside were blocked by thick iron plates. How can we respond in time to the great changes in society? Rather than relying solely on a less flexible and slow-reacting structure, it is better to gather forces from all walks of life and use the power of the masses to promote Hong Kong's progress.

2020 is no longer as simple as a set of numbers. 2020 is a tough year and a rare opportunity. I will see it as an opportunity so that we can re-examine this era of uncertainty. I decided to write again, hoping to use the power of words again to share my views on the future with all Hong Kong people. Based on the past experience, we exchanged and encouraged each other, adapt to the change together, master the change, and prepare for the next challenge.

From time to time, someone asks me: Why do you still have so many things after retirement? If you don't enjoy the leisurely life that you haven't had for a long time, you want to join the science and technology industry dominated by young people. To be honest, I don't think there is still the concept of "retirement" today. With the advancement of science and technology and the increase in life expectancy, modern people will have at least two to thirty years from retirement to the end of their lives. As defined by the public, I am not yet a "middleman". It's rare to let go of the burden and pressure of public servants and decide what I want and do. How can I let go of my interest and pursuit all the time and become a boring "scrap old" instead?

I have been fascinated by scientific research since I was studying, and the fire has not been extinguished. As I&T enters a period of strategic opportunities for development, I really can’t restrain my excitement and curiosity about the new era. I don’t know if you have ever watched "Star Trek", which contains a versatile handheld diagnostic instrument. Only by scanning the patient's body with the instrument, we can quickly understand the severity of the patient's condition and the cause of the disease. Unexpectedly, this technology, which was supposed to be born in the 23rd century, was already available in 2017. We now have similar medical equipment that can diagnose many diseases remotely. In the current "epidemic war", we should think more about how to protect ourselves and the people around us, and take the first step to meet future challenges.

If you think about it, don't be overly surprised. After all, technologies such as artificial intelligence and big data have been discussed as early as the 1950s and 1960s. As the "future man" in the eyes of predecessors, combining technology can put into practice what seemed to be a wild idea in the past, and bring more disruptive products and services.

The world is changing at an unprecedented rate, and if you lose your mind, you will not be able to keep up. The "willfulness" of Hong Kong people is to give up the easy and the harder, and will not be willing to be the first wave to be pushed down.

Some people say that the development of Hong Kong is lagging behind others, but is there any place in the world that can be regarded as an absolute leader? The world is changing all the time, and it is still unknown who can take the lead. Hong Kong is a place full of vitality and enthusiasm. In terms of strength, it is absolutely no less than other places. As a builder of the future, don't be determined to lose, as long as everyone moves forward hard, it will surely promote society to a more brilliant and prosperous age.

Let us continue to walk with Hong Kong, gradually expand the advantages of our city, and welcome the era of self-protection.
