(CNN Spanish) -  18 million cases of covid-19 in the world and almost 690,000 deaths: with some countries still in the first peak, others imposing new restrictions on outbreaks and experts concerned about the upcoming flu season, the The world tries to face a pandemic that does not stop.

America continues to be the continent most affected by the coronavirus, with the United States at the top, totaling almost 4.7 million infections, and Brazil behind, with 2.7 million, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. 

But the region marked a new bleak milestone: the virus has claimed the lives of more than 200,000 people in Latin America.

🇧🇷 Brazil

Confirmed cases:  2,733,677

Deaths:  94,104

Last week, Michelle Bolsonaro, the president's wife, Jair Bolsonaro, and two other government ministers tested positive for covid-19. Since the start of the pandemic, eight high-ranking officials have been infected with the new coronavirus. That includes the President, the First Lady and six Ministers. Since then, President Bolsonaro recovered and was negative for the virus.

🇲🇽 Mexico

The Mexican Health authorities reported this Sunday that the one million tests applied to suspected cases of coronavirus in the country have been passed.

Colombia reported 11,470 new cases on Sunday, its largest daily increase since the outbreak began, bringing the total number of cases to 317,651, the Health Ministry reported.

The ministry also reported 350 new deaths from covid-19.

More than 30% of the total cases have been registered in Bogotá, where the occupancy rate of the Intensive Care Unit was 89.9% until Sunday night.

Argentina confirmed 5,376 new cases of covid-19 on Sunday.

🇧🇴 Bolivia

Bolivia saw its deadliest day of the new coronavirus on Sunday, according to figures released by the Ministry of Health.

The ministry reported 89 new deaths from covid-19 in the past 24 hours, its largest daily increase since the outbreak began.
