Philippe Delerm: "A summer without the Tour de France makes us melancholy"

INTERVIEW - The writer regrets that, this year, the French are frustrated by the major sports competitions of the summer which nourish the national memory.


LE FIGARO. - The summer sports meetings have been canceled or postponed due to the health crisis. Are these events, for the French, inseparable from the holidays?

Philippe DELERM. - Separated, my wife and I, from our family during confinement, we have just found our son Vincent and our grandsons Sacha and Simon, in the Landes, during the holidays. It's a real Proust madeleine, because my oldest memory in this place dates back to the France-Germany semi-final, which took place in Seville in 1982. I watched it from the big screen at the campsite, surrounded by German tourists. Result: 3-3, draw, then France loses in the penalty shootout. My son Vincent was 5 years old and was not yet interested in football. He joined me at the end of the match. I was the only unhappy one in the midst of this jubilation of German supporters.
